Target species – Steelhead
Season: mid October – December 31st and 4th Saturday in April – Mid May.
Fish average in size from 5-8lbs with a few 10lb + fish caught every season. October comes with cold nights and precipitation, this season change gets many local anglers excited and one goal in mind, chrome bright, aggressive fish willingly ready to attack a swung fly! Generally, Lake Ontario holds a larger average sized steelhead compared to other Great Lake Systems. Fishing will remain good right up till she closes or freezes over. In spring, given the appropriate conditions we see a few fish taken on surface flies! This method will leave any angler shaking in their waders!
Early season on the Grand is a fantastic time of year for floating lines, subsurface/surface and classic steelhead flies. Fish average in size from 4-8lbs with few 10lbs fish caught every season. As October passes and water temperatures drop, we switch to heavier poly leaders, larger flies and slower presentations.
Known as the “Geen” to many. The season gets going with the cooler nights in September and perception in October, this is when we begin to see the first decent push of Steelhead enter the system. With the peak of the run beginning in mid October through November. December can be very productive for those willing to brave the elements! Average size fish you can expect to encounter range from 4-6lbs.
Known to many as the “Maity”, the Maitland River screams “Swing Me!” broad runs filled with perfectly placed nuggets, perfectly paced water and some of Ontario’s hardest pulling Steelhead! Many anglers lay in wait hoping for the cooler October temperatures and rain, hoping the Maity will get her water. Once she has received her water it’s game on! Fish average in size from 4-7lbs, with quite a few bruisers caught every season. Don’t be fooled by the smaller ones as you might think you have a giant on but once brought to hand you realize it’s only 4lbs! These fish are sure to get the heart racing, backing ripping through your guides, leaving anglers trembling and needing a quick break on the bank to regain their composure. It’s not known to anglers why these fish pull so hard, but it might just be because of the natural barrier they must overcome at Falls Reserve. A handshake with a Maitland Steelhead is a notch under the belt!
